The UK is the windiest country in Europe, so much so that we can generate large amounts of green electricity locally by utilising our wind resource. A modern 2.5 megawatt (MW) turbine at a reasonably windy site will generate 6.4 million units of electricity each year which is enough to meet the annual needs of about 1,400 households.
The Government’s Renewable Energy Strategy states that the target of generating 15% of all the UK’s energy from renewables by 2020 means that a higher percentrage of electricity will have to come from green sources. The lion’s share of these renewables should be wind. Over £60billion of investment and 160,000 so called green collar jobs are estimated to result from the move towards this new green economy.
